Cutco Home Sharpener, BAD
Every time I try to "refresh" the edge on my straight edge knives, my daughter has to leave the room. Sounds like rusty nails on a metal roll up door. In the discription it says "ceramic" wheels. I recently took mine apart to clean it out and looked closely at the condition of the wheels and there are 2 sets of 2 wheels to form the sharpening, oh, I mean "refreshing", V for the knife edge. One is skinny and sharp and appears to me metal. The wider one looks to be ceramic. The metal looking one has groves and chips in it. They both seem very loose and flop around a lot. When I draw the knife through the tool, it chatters and screaches, which is why my daughter has to leave the room. For the price and quality of your knives, you think you would have put a little more effort and care into designing a decent, real, "sharpening" tool. I have seen the home sharpeners that other professional knife makers provide to keep a factory edge on their knives and they are much better quality than this one.
I use this product for:trying to keep a decent edge on my knives

I have had my Cutco knives for about 10 years. Love them. The sharpener is another case. It will put a reasonable edge on the knives but there apperas to be some long term use issues.
Over the past 2 years I noticed portions of the knife blades were missing pieces, specifically the blade edge flaked off near the place where the blade curves toward the blade point. I also noticed similar problems with other non-Cutco knives (both stainless steel and regular steel) that I had been sharpening with the Cutco sharpener. I believe this may be caused by metal fatige due to the repeated unidirectional sharpening motion. I agree with several other comments that using this sharpener may not be in your knives best interest. Cutco will sharpen or replace the damaged Cutco knives but that will cost you some time and money. Get a better sharpening tool.
Response from CUTCO:By KathleenMarketingMarch 20, 2012
If there is ever an issue with a knife being damaged using the sharpener, please send the knife back to CUTCO with an explanation of what you're experiencing. What you describe is not the typical result of using the sharpener. In addition, results of using the sharpener on non-CUTCO items may vary, as the sharpener is designed specifically with CUTCO's straight-edge cantle angle in mind.

Knife sharpener
As an owner of just about every Cutco product including the sharpener <sic>), it is the only purchase I regret. It is worthless and does not even really put the Cutco "edge" on any blade. Would pay dearly for the reps kit that is used for home sharpening, but am told it is not for sale. Too bad. After an investment of over $2,000 with Cutco, one would think that I could qualify for a break from this policy. The reps are generous with their time and expertise when they schedule a home visit, but there is little left to buy for my own use. A little help here please?

Thank you for the feedback. I'm going to share this with our product development team. One thing to note is that the CUTCO sharpener only freshens the edge, to truly sharpen knives you should have them factory sharpened.

Doesn't compare to company's high standards
I have read all the reviews (I think) of this product. I was amazed at how many reviews expressed my feelings about this product. As one reviewer said they would like to have their previous sharpener instead of the "new" version. ME TOO! Compared to the high quality of your knives this sharpener is pittiful. I still have knives that i originally purchased in the early 70"s. Your R&D department needs to find a replacement for this piece of junk. Please, bring back the "old" sharpener and/or offer a steel. Cutco needs to fix this quickly!

Quality does not match Cutco knives
I hate using this sharpener on my knives. It makes the knife a little sharper but the edge doesn't last long. If you look at the knife edge after using this sharpener you will understand. It really appears to destroy the knife edge. A stone or steel puts a much better edge on these knifes. I LOVE the Cutco knives but this sharpener must have been sourced from Taiwan. This stays in the back of my knife drawer. Maybe Cutco just wants you to send the knives back to them for sharpening more often.

***THIS DOES NOT WORK***
I have no idea what Cutco is thinking here, but you CAN NOT SHARPEN KNIVES WITH THIS TOOL. Whats worse is that Cutco does not offer a much needed tool with ANY knife set, and that is a honing steel. Two things happen to fine edges. The edge, from regular daily use, gets turned or bent out of true. The edge is still there, it just needs to be be brought back up straight and true. This is where the honing steel comes in. After a fair amount of use (a few months to a year depending) the knife will become dull. The honing steel can not restore the edge because there isnt one. The knife must be actually sharpened, which means that material needs to be ground off the sides of the knife to restore the edge. THIS IS NOT A TASK THAT SHOULD BE DONE IN THE HOME. Pro chefs send their knives out to be sharpened and so should anyone purchasing these knives. In short, this tool SHOULD NOT BE USED IN ANY CAPACITY WITH YOUR FINE CUTCO EDGES, IF YOU BUY THESE KNIVES, GO TO YOUR LOCAL KITCHEN SUPPLY STORE AND BUY A HONING STEEL.

Very Convenient
You don't have to know much to be able to use this. There is an arrow pointing which direction to slide the knife. You have to be somewhat maticulous with how you drag the knife through, but it has worked well for me over the years.

Superior Sharpener
This sharpener has far surpassed anything I have yet to use. It's worked on scissors, table knives and kitchen knives. I haven't had it too long (only 5 months). I'm very pleased with my purchase.

Better Than No Sharpener!
If your knives are really dull, this sharpener will help. But I'm looking for a sharpener that will put a sharp fine edge on the knife, and this is not the one. I'm much better off continuing to use a wet stone to sharpen my knifes. I think you can do much better for less money. But the Cutco sharpener is easy to use and convenient - it just doesn't perform as I'd expect. I'm returning it.

Sharp Kinives are Important!
I bought the sharpener after I received the 4"paring knife as a gift and very happy I did.

Disappointed
I got my first Cutco sharpener back in 1989, with our first butcher block set. I was able to sharpen anything I needed including other brand knives. Within the last year I traded it in for the new and improved style sharpener Cutco has to offer and I am not impressed. It takes longer to sharpen the knives and does not give it as nice of an edge. I would really rather have my old style sharpener back.

Easy to use
The guy before me must not be using this right. I have a Cutco pocket knife I carry everywhere I go and I use it a lot. A couple of strokes with this sharpener and it keeps a great edge. Don't let the blade get too dull before sharpening. I love mine!

Not impressed
I bought this and was not impressed with it. Cutco is a great company! I recently sent back some knifes and they sent back very sharp product! But, this sharpener is not working for me. Perhaps i am using it wrong because I love their product.
